SEHWAG SCORES TWIN FIFTIES IN DELHI TEST

Hi guys.Virender Sehwag hits fifty in both the innings in First Test Match against Windies at the Feroz Shah Kotla. Its a great coincidence that in my last post and in this post on Virender Sehwag,Sehwag has scored in pair.Sehwag was out for duck in both the innings in Edgbaston Test against England.During the Home series against West Indies,in the First Test at Feroz Shah Kotla,Delhi,Viru scored half-centuries in the both the innings.

In first innings, Sehwag scored 55 runs in 45 balls with 9 boundaries.And in second innings,Viru bhai scored 55 runs from 55 balls with 5 boundaries and 2 sixes.The Nawab of Najafgarh once again came back to the striking form on his home soil(Delhi).

Indians came back well after their first innings deficit by bundling out the Windies for 180 runs in thier second innings.India went on to win the match by 5 wickets and the debutant Ravichandran Ashwin was adjudged Man of the Match for his 9 wicket haul in the Delhi Test Match.

VIRENDER SEHWAG ENGLAND TEST DUCK OUT

Every one were waiting for Vireder Sehwag's comeback from the injury after the shoulder operation.The Indian Team and the Indian Cricket fans were relying on Viru to save the NO:1 position in the Tests.Sehwag was expected to go all guns blazing and thrash the Englishmen.But what happened at the Edgbaston Test was entirely different.

Sehwag was out for a first ball duck in both the innings in the Edgbaston test.First innings dismissal was though a bit unluncky.Sehwag tried to leave the ball but the ball took the glove of Sehwag and was caught behind.

If Sehwag had provided a good start,Indians wouldn't have lost their NO:1 position in the Test Rankings and would have easily drawn the Edgbaston test.

We hope that Virender Sehwag will be back with his striking form in the Fourth and final test against England and help the Indian team to regain the NO:1 postion in the Test Rankings.

After the ICC Cricket World Cup Opening Ceremony,the first World Cup match was played between India and Bangladesh on 19 th of Feb.Bangladesh won the toss and elected to field first.Virender Sehwag started the World Cup with a classic boundary.

At end of fourth over the run rate was above 12.Running between the wickets was poor and Sachin was run out as Sehwag din't respomd to Sachin's call.But Viru compensated for his mistake by coming up with a wonderful knock of 175 runs in 140 balls.Sehwag hit 14 fours and 5 sixes.This was Viru's second century in the World Cup matches.

Virender Sehwag missed the chance of beating the record of former Indian Captain Saurav for the Highest Score in a World Cup match.Ganguly achieved this landmark by hitting 183* runs in the 1999 Word Cup against Sri Lanka.

Indians won the match by 87 runs and this wasn't a thumping win for them.The bowling attack need to pull up their socks, especially the pace bowling attack as they weren't up to the mark in the match against the Bangladeshis.

Indian Skipper MS Dhoni returned to the squad for the second test at Mirpur against Bangladesh.Bangladesh won the toss and elected to bat.Bangladesh's batsmen couldn't handle the heat of Indian bowlers and were allout were 233 runs.

Asusually our Viru was blazing away and reached to yet another half century and got out in Sohadat's ball. Virender scored 56 runs from 63 balls.With Batting Maestro Tendulkar and The Wall Dravid scoeing centuries India reached a mammoth total of 554 runs and declared the innings.

Bangladesh again crumbled against Indian bowling except for Tamim Iqbal who scored 151 runs with 18 Fours and 3 sixes.Tamim Iqbal showed good solidarity and he was one of the cause for sending Indians out of the 2007 World Cup.

Indians won the match by 10 wickets and sealed off the series 2-0.Zaheer Khan was Man of the Match for his 10 wicket haul and he was also the Man of the Series for his excellent performance with the ball.

VEERU BHAI IN FIRST TEST AGAINST BANGLADESH

After the tri-nation tournament,Indians were raring to go for the test series against the Bangladeshis'.

The magical Captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni was having back spasms and was ruled out for the first test at Chittagong.The Indian side was led by the Sultan of Multan and had to bat first.

Asusual, Sehwag played his natural game and reached half-century.He scored 52 runs from 51 balls which contained 9 fours in it.But the opposition skipper Shakib-Al-Hasan picked up the wicket of Veeru when he was at 52 runs.After Sehwag's wicket,Indians crumbled but batting maestro Sahin Tendulkar came to the rescue by scoring an unbeaten century.Indians reached a total of 243 runs in the first innings.Bangladesh was also up to the task and they scored 242 runs in the first innings.

In the second innings also Sehwag had a good start and scored 45 runs,but was again out to a ball from the opposition Captain Shakib.Contribution from the other batsmen helped India to set a target of 414 runs.

Bangladesh looked very tough and gave a good fight, but in the end they were on the losing side.Indians won the First test match by 113 runs and led series 1-0.

SEHWAG IN BANGLADESH TRI-NATION TOURNAMENT

Indians started the new year with tri-nation tournament in Bangladesh.On 5th january it was India vs Sri Lanka again after the bilateral series between them.

As always Veeru provided a good start by hitting 47 runs from 31 balls which included nine boundaries.He was in a great touch but unfortunately got out in Welegedera's ball.Indians made 279 runs in 50 overs with the contribution of middle order.the Lankans were up for the task and Thilan Samaraweera took the Lankans to a victory by scoring an unbeaten century.

In the second match against Bangladesh,Indians were made to chase a target of 297 runs. Sehwag started well by hiiting 2 boundaries but was run out at 13 runs from 8 balls.It was young Delhi dasher Virat Kohli and Captain cool MSD who took India to a first win in the tournament.

Virender Sehwag was rested for the next two matches in the tournament.Indians won those two matches and got qualified for the Finals of the tournament and it was between India and Sri Lanka.

India batted first in the finals and they lost some early wickets.Though the wickets was tumbling at one end, Virender Sehwag was unstoppable.Viru dint consider the fact that it was a good pitch for bowlers and played some awesome shots to make 42 runs from 27 balls which included 7 fours.Raina too chipped in and made a century to take the total tem score to 245 runs.But the Sri Lankans were in great form and they completely ouplayed the Indians and won the finals of the Tri-Nation Tournament.

DELHI PITCH FIASCO

After a two match ban Dhoni returned to the Indian side and took over the captaincy from Veeru.Feroz Shah Kotla stadium had full attendance as it had five Delhi Daredevils players Virender Sehwag , Gautam Gambhir, Dinesh Karthik , Ashish Nehra and the Sri Lankan Tilakaratne Dilshan.

Zaheer Khan started off the match by taking Tharanga's wicket in the first ball.The pitch was assisting the fast bowlers as well as spinners.The pitch had uneven bounce with one ball bouncing over the head level and another keeping low for similar lengths of the balls bowled.Debutant Sudeep Tyagi was hitting the the deck hardly and Dilshan was struck on his body twice.Harbhajan too had good bounce on the wicket.Dhoni and Dilshan was surprised with the way the ball took off when Bhaji bowled.

Dilshan came down when he got struck on the elbow by a ball from Nehra in the 24th over.It seemed to be a nasty blow.Then the match was abandoned as the pitch was declared unsafe for the players to continue play further. It was a shame for Indian cricket that such an incident took place that too in Delhi.

Indians won the series 3-1.

SEHWAG AGAINST SRILANKA IN ODI SERIES 2010

After a nail biting finish in the Rajkot ODI,both the Indians and Lankans were charged up for the Nagpur ODI.Mahendra Singh Dhoni won the toss and elected to bat first.

VEERU disappointed all the fans by getting out after hitting a four.But MS Dhoni played a Captain's knock and scored a century.Suresh Raina and Virat Kohli too chipped in and scored half centuries.Indians set a taget of 302 runs for the Lankans.Tilakaratne Dilshan played a match winning knock of 123 Runs and guided the Sri Lankans to a win,thereby levelling the series 1-1.

Dhoni was banned for 2 ODIs for slow over-rate during the 2nd match at Nagpur.The captaincy was handed over to VIRENDER SEHWAG for the next two matches.The lions batted first in the Cuttack One-Dayer and was all out for 239 Runs.The NAWAB OF NAJAFGARH hit 9 fours and scored a quick 44 Runs.His master Sachin Tendulkar made 96 runs and remained unbeaten which helped India to take a lead of 2-1 in the series .

Next match was in Kolkatta and in this match also Indians were made to chase.The wounded lions made a competitive total of 315.This time Sehwag failed and added only 10 runs to his tally.But his Delhi teammates Gauti and Kohli played responsibly and made 150(not out) and 107 runs respectively.Indians clinched the series by winning the match at Kolkatta.

SEHWAG THRASHES SRILANKA IN RAJKOT ODI

After a good T20 series,both the Indians and the Sri Lankans were geared up for the ODI clash.The 1st ODI was held at Rajkot on December 15th.

Kumar Sangakara won the toss and elected to field first.Virender Sehwag opened the batting with his idol Sachin Tendulkar.

Both Sehwag and Tendulkar were in great touch and they put up a partnership of 153 Runs for the first wicket.

Especially Veeru was in scintillating form and he went on to make 146 Runs from just 102 balls.In his innings, he hit 17 boundaries and 6 sixes.

The knock made by Nawab of Najafgarh helped India to score the highest total in ODI which is 414 Runs.Sri Lankans also gave a good fight but they ended up on the losing side and India won the first ODI by 3 runs.

SEHWAG FIREWORKS CONTINUES IN T20s

In the first T20 International at Nagpur, Sehwag scored 26 runs from 14 balls and gave a good start with his partner Gautam Gambhir.But the Indian middle order failed and they lost the match by 29 runs.Also the fielding has been worst in the match and the Indians ended up on the losing side.

In the second T20I at Mohali,Veeru scored his second T20I Fiifty by hitting 64 runs from 36 balls.This time Indian middle order capitalized on the start given by the openers Sehwag and Gambhir.Birthday boy Yuvraj Singh hit 60 runs from 25 balls.Atlast Indians managed to win comfortably with 6 wickets in hand.

After an emphatic innings victory at Kanpur,the indians were fully charged up for the final Test at Mumbai.

Sri Lankans started their first innings on day 1 and ended up reaching a total of 393 runs.

Virender Sehwag was in awesome form and made an yet another double century on day 2.This helped India to reach 443/1 in just 79 overs.Sehwag is the only Indian batsman to have triple century against his name.That too he has two triple centuries to his tally equalling Brian Charles Lara's and Sir Don Bradman's record.

Day 3 of the Mumbai test was considered to be historic day in the cricketing history since Sehwag was on the verge of getting his 3rd triple ton.If he gets it, he would be the first batsman to do so in the history of cricket.

After a disappointing loss against the aussies in the ODIs, India started their campaign against Sri Lanka with the Tests.First test match held at Ahmadabad was drawn.

In the Second test at Kanpur,India won the toss and elected to bat.After a cautious start, Virender Sehwag and his Delhi team mate Gautam Gambhir went on to make a 233 run partnership for the first wicket.Sehwag hit 133 runs from 122 balls and was out in 'smiling assasin' Muttaih Murlidaran's over.

The momentum at which Sehwag scored the century and the centuries made by Gautam Gambhir and Rahul Dravid helped India to achieve the highest total(642 Runs) in Tests .After a fabulous performance by all the indian bowlers, India won the Kanpur Test by an Innings and 144 runs.Sreesanth was named Man of the Match for his five wicket haul.

The clash between India and Australia in the Honour series had kicked off with a nail-biting encounter in the 1st ODI on 25 th of October.Australia won the first battle by 4 runs in Vadodra.Indians gave a fitting reply to the Aussies in the 2nd ODI by thrashing the Aussies by 99 runs.

In both ODIs the Nawab of Najafgarh (Sehwag) was in prime form after his comeback from the shoulder injury.Sehwag was out for just 13 runs in the 1st ODI but hit three great shots for boundary.In the second ODI he teared apart the Aussie bowling attack by hitting 6 fours and 1 six.He scored 40 runs from 31 balls.The start given by Sehwag helped Gambhir,Dhoni to put a big total on the board.

IRANI CUP:SEHWAG TO CAPTAIN REST OF INDIA

Indian opener Virender Sehwag was on Wednesday named skipper of the Rest of India team for the Irani Cup, scheduled to be played in November-December.

The BCCI selection commitee, who met in Chennai, also selected the three teams for the Challenger Series, which will be held from October 8 to 11.

Yuvraj Singh will lead India Red, Suresh Raina will captain India Green and MS Dhoni will skipper India Blues, according to a statement issued by the BCCI.

India's dashing opener Virender Sehwag walked the ramp at the Kolkata Fashion Week (KFW)-II here, sending the audience into raptures.Wearing a hand-woven sherwani suit, Sehwag exuded oodles of confidence as he walked the ramp for designer Rocky S. here on Wednesday night.

"Sehwag was perfectly chilled out in the attire. He was happy about what he was wearing," Rocky S. told mediapersons after the late night fashion event at a city hotel.

"When a person is confident about what he is wearing, it's half the battle won," he said.

Talking about his new collection, Rocky S. said, "This time I focused on colour and textile-based comfort oriented fashion wear. I tried to keep my collection very light so that it becomes more wearable.

"I used silk, hand-woven fabric mainly adopted from Benaras, and linen in my collection. I made this collection, especially keeping in mind the culture of Kolkata where hand-woven and colourful textiles are popular among people."

Asked why he had chosen a sportsman like Sehwag as a showstopper, Rocky S. said: "Sports is very important in India. So I've chosen a cricketer for the role."

The stunning newspaper report on last Monday set the proverbial cat among the piegons. Just like his bat, Sehwag had let loose a carnage of verbal volleys that shook Delhi cricket from its very roots.Sehwag told the paper: "In Ranji trophy selection, it has often happened that 4 selectors get together & vote for 'their' players, leaving the chairman of the committee and me defeated. Especially when I am on national duty, they put pressure on the stand-in captains and the interference becomes more rampant. This manipulation has been going on for many years. What is the point in continuing to play for such an association where there is so much corruption."

"This thing has been going for the last six-seven years but I am glad that Viru has come out in the open to clean up the DDCA," said former India and Delhi player Madan Lal.

"We have been saying this thing for a long time but when Virender expresses his feelings on the entire affair, people will have to take the matter seriously," said another former player Kirti Azad.

Even as the training camp for the new season got underway, the signs of a mutiny were all there. The sticking points were well known, only now they were in sharp focus.

The all-powerful sports committee that made crucial decisions such as chosing the selection panel did not include a single former cricketer. There was rampant manipulation and corruption in the under-16 and under-19 categories. Former cricketers such as Madan Lal, Kirti Azad, Maninder Singh and Surinder Khanna had been forced out from positions within the DDCA. The system of elections through proxy votes had bred corruption and nepotism. Unhappy players such as the talented Amit Mishra were forced out of the state by inconsistent selections.

"He (Sehwag) has set something good for cricket and the chairman of selectors Chetan Chauhan has also promised that we will listen to him," said Delhi selector Bantoo Singh.

SEHWAG SHAPING WELL FOR CT : DHONI

Virender Sehwag, recuperating from a shoulder surgery, was shaping well for the Champions Trophy, according to Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni who said the dashing opener may however not be ready for the tri-series in Sri Lanka in early September.

"He is improving every day. He is putting in a lot of effort to get ready for the Champions Trophy," Dhoni said on Thursday.

On Sehwag's chances of playing in the tri-series in Sri Lanka starting on September 8, Dhoni hinted the batsman may have to sit out of the event.

"It's (tri-series) too soon, with just a few days to go," he said.Sehwag has been following a rehabilitation programme, which makes him doubtful not only for the September 8-14 tri-series in Sri Lanka but also cast a cloud of doubt over his availability for the Champions Trophy in South Africa starting on September 22.Dhoni said apart from Sehwag, there were no other injury issues and the players looked in perfect shape for a hectic schedule ahead."We just had a mid-term fitness test and we'll have a camp before the tri-series to get back into the groove and get ready for the long season ahead," Dhoni said.

India's only batsman to hit two triple centuries, opener Virender Sehwag says his penchant to hit big centuries in Tests was driven by critics doubting his calibre in the longer version of the game.

"In Test matches I'm very cautious. I want to score more runs and I want to score big runs and I want to prove everyone wrong because when I came to the Indian team everybody was saying 'He's only a one-day player, he cannot bat in Test cricket'," he said on an ICC talk show.

Often compared to Tendulkar, Sehwag said he always wanted to emulate the little master.

"I wanted to become a Tendulkar, but that's not possible because he is a God of cricket. When I was watching him on television, I tried to copy every single shot."

SEHWAG RACING AGAINST TIME FOR CT

After being out of action for over two months following a shoulder injury that needed surgery, dashing opener Virender Sehwag is hoping to return to top-notch cricket through the ICC Champions Trophy next month.

"I am hoping to play in the ICC Champions Trophy. My rehabilitation is going well," said the Delhi marauder on the sidelines of a book release function here on Friday.

Sehwag underwent a surgery on June 11 after a lesion was identified in the injured shoulder and he was ruled out of action from between 12 to 16 weeks. The lesion was expected to heal in six weeks.

Indian team's physio Nitin Patel was given the task of monitoring Sehwag's rehabilitation process at the National Cricket Academy in Bangalore.The Champions Trophy, earlier termed the Mini World Cup, is also to be held in South Africa from September 22.

Sehwag said he will start batting practice from the first week of September and is now able to lift 10 kg with his injured shoulder. "But I can't throw or bowl yet," he said.

As a first step towards a recall into the Indian team, Sehwag, who has played in 69 Tests and 205 ODIs in which he has amassed a combined 12,000-plus runs, at a fabulous strike rate of close to 90, is to visit the NCA in Bangalore on August 15.

"I am set to go to Bangalore (NCA) on August 15 (for assessment of his progress from injury)", said the ace batsman who has 26 hundreds to his credit in Tests and ODIs combined.

Significantly, the Indian selectors are to meet on August 16 to pick the Champions Trophy squad, as well as the ODI squad for the triangular series in Sri Lanka preceding it, on the next day at Chennai.

Sehwag's selection for the ICC event would depend on the report that would be sent by the Indian team physiotherapist ahead of the selection panel meeting. He has been visiting the NCA after his surgery as part of his rehab process.

If he fails to make the cut for the Champions Trophy the next target is the seven-match ODI series against World Cup champions Australia that commences on October 25.

The injury to Virender Sehwag has taken a new turn with reports suggesting that the opener may be forced out of action for three to four months, leaving his participation in the ICC Champions Trophy in doubt.

The ICC Champions Trophy is to be played in South Africa from Sept. 24 to Oct. 5 and post-operation reports have suggested that the dashing opener from Delhi cannot return to competitive cricket until the first week of September, according to a report published in The Hindu.

Sehwag was operated on June 11 after arthroscopic investigations by Dr. Angus Wallace, Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at The Park Hospital, Nottingham identified a Grade II Superior Labral Tear from Anterior to Posterior (SLAP) lesion in his right shoulder.

Sehwag was earlier ruled out of the ICC World Twenty20 despite being picked in the squad and travelled to England. The Hindu report suggested Sehwag experienced pain after the arthroscopic repair and required substantial analgesia and shoulder Cryo Cuff to ease pain.

His rehabilitation programme began soon with pendulum exercises and elbow and hand exercises. He has also been advised to do isometric exercises in static position (without moving the shoulder) and to stay in broad arm sling and continue all exercises for four weeks.

Should the initial rehabilitation schedule produce the desired results, Sehwag will be asked to free himself from the sling and begin shoulder strengthening and mobility exercises. He would be monitored by the Indian team physio Nitin Patel right through the rehabilitation programme and at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bangalore.

He is likely to undergo isokinetic shoulder strength evaluation in order to find out if he can throw the ball after 10 weeks of the operation and also return to nets by the first week of September, the report added.

Dr. Wallace expects the SLAP lesion to heal in six weeks in order to begin shoulder strengthening and mobile exercises. The entire rehabilitation process is aimed at easing pain and for a comfortable and pain-free functioning of the right shoulder. Sehwag may return to action in September, but a tardy recovery may not allow him to play until October.

The rest and rehabilitation process is going to be a slow and steady affair and expected to last till the end of August, raising serious doubts whether he would be match fit for the ICC Champions Trophy commencing September 24 in South Africa.

Sehwag's likely absence in the tournament would certainly be a major blow for India's hopes, especially with signs of him having come to terms with the ebbs and flows of the 50-over game in the last twelve months.

However, the bigger question is how far would the repaired joint hamper Sehwag's carefree style of batting in the immediate future.
It's the right shoulder which would come prominently into action for his pull shots, slashes over third man and his patented whippy shots played off the hip.

Sehwag's idol and role model Sachin Tendulkar had to re-orient his batting style after undergoing shoulder surgery a few years ago under the same surgeon whom he has now consulted, Dr Andrew Wallace.

Millions of his fans would be waiting with bated breath for Sehwag's return to the national side, probably in the seven-match ODI series at home against Australia in October-November after the conclusion of the Champions Trophy.

That series could, perhaps, be a pointer to whether the Delhi marauder can recapture his ability to bat in his patented fashion, especially on the on-side, or would need to reshape his batting style a bit.

Virender Sehwag is a primal talent whose rough edges make him all the more appealing. By the time he had scored his first centuries in one-day cricket (off 70 balls, against New Zealand) and Test cricket (on debut, against South Africa, from 68 for 4), he was already eliciting comparisons with his idol Sachin Tendulkar. It is half true. Like Tendulkar, he is short and square with curly hair, plays the straight drive, backfoot punch and whip off the hips identically, but leaves Tendulkar in the shade when it comes to audacity.

Asked to open the innings in Tests on the tour of England in 2002, Sehwag proved an instant hit, cracking an 80 and a 100 in the first two matches. Regularly thereafter, he kept conjuring pivotal innings at the top of the order, none as significant as India's first 300 (which he bought up, characteristically, with a six), at Multan against Pakistan in early 2004.

Sehwag bowls effective, loopy offspin, and is a reliable catcher in the slips. He also once almost split the cricket world: when he was banned for a match by the ICC referee Mike Denness on grounds of excessive appealing, the Indian board wasn't prepared to listen, and even played an unofficial Test with South Africa to prove a point. When a compromise was finally reached, Sehwag was back to his merry ways.

Though he continued to dominate in the Test arena, Sehwag's one-day form dipped alarmingly - after January 2004, he went through a period of 60 matches where he averaged under 29. Despite his fitness levels dropping and his one-day spot being under threat - he was dropped from the side for the home series against West Indies in early 2007 - Sehwag continued to sparkle in Tests, as shown by his magnificent 254 at Lahore. In June, he came excruciatingly close to scoring a century before lunch in the first day against West Indies in St Lucia, a feat never accomplished before by an Indian batsman.

After a string of poor scores, Sehwag was dropped from India's Test squad to Bangladesh in 2007, and was not considered for either the Test or ODI sides to England. He was a surprise pick for the Test team to tour Australia after not being named in the initial list of probables.

Sehwag had to wait for two matches before he made a strong comeback in the Perth Test, where he gave the innings' momentum with knocks of 29 and 43, and took two wickets with his offspin in Australia's second innings, to help India claim one of their greatest wins. He followed it up with scores of 63 and an imperious 151 - his first century in the team's second innings - to help India draw the Test in Adelaide. Then, in the first Test against South Africa in Chennai, he made an even more emphatic statement, rattling off the quickest triple-century in Test cricket, off just 278 balls. He eventually made 319 - the highest score by an Indian - and in the process became only the third batsman, after Don Bradman and Brian Lara, to pass 300 twice in Tests. In his next Test series against Sri Lanka in 2008, Sehwag thrived while the Indian middle-order struggled against the mystery spin of Ajantha Mendis. His double-hundred and half-century were instrumental in India winning the Galle Test.

Virender Sehwag, nicknamed ‘Viru’, is an international cricketer, who is known for his aggressive right-hand batting style. He was born to Mr.Krishan and his wife Krishna Sehwag on October 20, 1978 in Delhi, India and has three siblings. Virender Sehwag got married to Aarti Alhawat in April 2004 and they have a son born on October 18, 2007.

Virender Sehwag made his Test match debut in 2001 as a middle-order batsman for the Indian team against South Africa with a century to his name, scoring 105. After home series in 2001-02 against England and Zimbabwe, Virender Sehwag was promoted up the order to open the innings in the 2002 England tour and he remained in the order ever since. During the 2002-03 season, he scored his maiden home century of 147 against West Indies, earning his first Man of the Match award and on December 26, 2003 test match against Australia, he scored 195.

In 2004, Virender Sehwag scored the first ever triple century by an Indian with 309 runs against Pakistan, earning the Man of the Match award and later, the Man of the Series award. The same year, he scored 155 against Australia in Chennai and 164 in the First Test of the series against South Africa and 88 in the second, claiming the Man of the Series award once again. At the 2005 three-match Test series against Pakistan, Virender Sehwag scored a total of 544 runs at an average of 90.66, and he went on to cross 3000 runs becoming the fastest Indian to reach it in terms of innings played. For his performance in the earlier 12-months period, Virender Sehwag got selected in the International Cricket Council (ICC) Test Team of the Year and also got nominated for the Test Player of the Year award. He captained the side in the third Test match of a series against Sri Lanka in the absence of Rahul Dravid, leading the team to victory.

In January 2005, Virender Sehwag scored 254 against Pakistan, which was the highest ever Test score at a strike rate of above 100 and the second fastest double century. In the process, he was also involved in the 410 run partnership with Rahul Dravid, which was just four run short of a record opening partnership in Test matches. In the second Test match of the 2006 West Indies tour, Virender Sehwag hit 180 runs in 190 balls and also took four wickets and for his good efforts, he was named the Man of the Match. In the fourth Test match of the December 2007 series against Australia, he scored a match-saving 151 in the second innings, his first century in the second innings of a test match. In the April 2008 home series against South Africa, Virender Sehwag claimed the fastest Test triple century with 319 in the first Test in Chennai, becoming the third batsman to score 2 triple centuries.

Virender Sehwag made his One Day International (ODI) debut in April 1999, but came to prominence in March 2001, when he earned a Man of the Match award for his all-round performance in a game against Australia. In August 2001, in a tri-series involving India, Sri Lanka, and New Zealand, Virender Sehwag was given the opportunity to open the innings for India on the absence of Sachin Tendulkar. In the finalist-decider against New Zealand, he scored his maiden ODI century in just 69 balls, the second fastest ODI century by an Indian. In 2002, he scored the Indian second fastest half-century in just 22 balls against Kenya in Bloemfontein. He, with Sourav Ganguly, had two big ODI partnerships, 192 against England, in which he scored 126 from 104 balls, and 196 against West Indies, in which he scored unbeaten 114 from 82 balls. Virender Sehwag was the only batsman to score a century in the 7 match ODI series against New Zealand, scoring two centuries, 108 in Napier and 112 in Auckland. He played in the 2003 ICC Cricket World Cup and scored his tournament highest of 82 in the final against Australia. At the 2003-04 ODI series, Virender Sehwag scored one century and 3 fifties and in 2004 and at the 2004-05 ODI series, he earned 3 Man of the Match awards.
